Micromechanical response of pure magnesium at different strain rate and temperature conditions: twin to slip and slip to twin transitions

The strain rate (ε˙) and temperature (T) dependent mechanical response of single crystal magnesium (Mg) micropillars compressed along the [2¯110] direction (a-axis) is investigated from room to 573 K 10-3 100 s-1. loading was chosen disfavour basal slip activation by a low Schmid factor, allowing investigation rate-sensitivities extension twinning prismatic slip. For T ≤ 423 K, plasticity governed for entire range applied rates. At > ε˙ 10 s-1, did not occur continuous plastic flow induced dislocation mediated observed: twin transition takes place due decrease critical resolved shear stress non-basal however, accommodation deformation enough match rate, favouring again twinning. first part this work provides complete overview mutual effects on points modes in Mg at microscale. In second stage, influence thermal kinetic contributions evolution leading has been assessed more detail. Within slip-dominated regime, quantitative assessment increases saturation (stage III) with high temperature, showing how dependency generation pillar escape free surfaces structure controls microcrystals.
